Week 70- Riots in Resistencia

Hey everyone! So not so crazy week this week... I know, weird right? Saturday and Sunday were lock-ins because of a 72,000 member women´s conference/riot that took place here in Resistencia. Nothing happened to us (the missionaries) but the women tried to burn down the catholic church (and also threw paint on it, see pics) and went out it the streets with syringes full of hiv to attack people with!

They all left monday morning. Elder Olmos and I created a mini movie theater in our pension and enjoyed a great asado (bbq).

The other days of the week were pretty smooth and there really isnt anything huge to write about. We had a great lesson with Mauro y Yanina. They are super excited about the church and to our suprise Yanina loves the word of wisdom! We´re hoping they can get to church this week!
Sorry for the short email, hope life is great for ya´ll this week!

Week 69- What an AP Does....

This week was full of traveling. We had three training meetings in different parts of the mission and also had to drive to formosa to pick up a sick sister that has to return to the states for surgery. Just so you know, the title Assistant to the President is short for: Taxi, Ambulance, Chofer, Medical staff, Secretary, Missionary, Call help center, Matenece, Pension inspector, computer technition, motivational speaker, counselor, etc. Haha its a busy, yet wonderful life as an AP.

We had a great lesson with a new investigator and his girlfriend. They are really interested in learning about the church and are planning to come this week! We were able to teach them and pray with them. when we came back the man commented that he was so greatful for prayers and that the prayer that was offered which asked for work was answered and his girlfriend found work!

Sorry its short this week but I hope you have a great week! I was reading in the BOM and started from page 1. I hope you find this page interesting to study as I did.

A Brief Explanation about the Book of Mormon
The Book of Mormon is a sacred record of peoples in ancient America and was engraved upon metal plates. Sources from which this record was compiled include the following:

The Plates of Nephi, which were of two kinds: the small plates and the large plates. The former were more particularly devoted to spiritual matters and the ministry and teachings of the prophets, while the latter were occupied mostly by a secular history of the peoples concerned (1 Nephi 9:2–4). From the time of Mosiah, however, the large plates also included items of major spiritual importance.

The Plates of Mormon, which consist of an abridgment by Mormon from the large plates of Nephi, with many commentaries. These plates also contained a continuation of the history by Mormon and additions by his son Moroni.

The Plates of Ether, which present a history of the Jaredites. This record was abridged by Moroni, who inserted comments of his own and incorporated the record with the general history under the title “Book of Ether.”

The Plates of Brass brought by the people of Lehi from Jerusalem in 600 B.C. These contained “the five books of Moses, … and also a record of the Jews from the beginning, … down to the commencement of the reign of Zedekiah, king of Judah; and also the prophecies of the holy prophets” (1 Nephi 5:11–13). Many quotations from these plates, citing Isaiah and other biblical and nonbiblical prophets, appear in the Book of Mormon.

The Book of Mormon comprises fifteen main parts or divisions, known, with one exception, as books, usually designated by the name of their principal author. The first portion (the first six books, ending with Omni) is a translation from the small plates of Nephi. Between the books of Omni and Mosiah is an insert called the Words of Mormon. This insert connects the record engraved on the small plates with Mormon’s abridgment of the large plates.

The longest portion, from Mosiah through Mormon chapter 7, is a translation of Mormon’s abridgment of the large plates of Nephi. The concluding portion, from Mormon chapter 8 to the end of the volume, was engraved by Mormon’s son Moroni, who, after finishing the record of his father’s life, made an abridgment of the Jaredite record (as the book of Ether) and later added the parts known as the book of Moroni.

In or about the year A.D. 421, Moroni, the last of the Nephite prophet-historians, sealed the sacred record and hid it up unto the Lord, to be brought forth in the latter days, as predicted by the voice of God through His ancient prophets. In A.D. 1823, this same Moroni, then a resurrected personage, visited the Prophet Joseph Smith and subsequently delivered the engraved plates to him.

About this edition: The original title page, immediately preceding the contents page, is taken from the plates and is part of the sacred text. Introductions in a non-italic typeface, such as in 1 Nephi and immediately preceding Mosiah chapter 9, are also part of the sacred text. Introductions in italics, such as in chapter headings, are not original to the text but are study helps included for convenience in reading.

Some minor errors in the text have been perpetuated in past editions of the Book of Mormon. This edition contains corrections that seem appropriate to bring the material into conformity with prepublication manuscripts and early editions edited by the Prophet Joseph Smith.

Week 68- General Conference

This week was great! We had General Conference over the weekend and then helped President with interviews in formosa and resistencia.

General Conference is always a highlight of the year and always comes just when you need it most. Hearing the Apostles of God speak inspired me in so many ways. Three of my favorite talks were:

Yearing for Home by President Uchtdorf
Lord, Wilt Thou Cause That My Eyes May Be Opened by Elder Zwick

I hope you enjoy them as well!

On monday we had a cool experience as we were buying some banners for the Capillas Abiertas that we have here in the mission. As we were designing the banners in the print shop, the lady at the desk walks over to us and asks us which branch we are from. We were a little confused at first and we must have looked like it because she said "oh, im a member! I was baptized when i was little but since I married and moved here to resistencia I havent been going to church. Can you come by and teach and baptize my two sons?" Uhhh.....Yes! We set up a day and are going to teach them. Sometimes its difficult as an Assistant to not be able to work in our area as much as we would like but that was a testimony to me that while we werent in our area, we were trying to help the mission by doing what we needed to do to prepare these banners. And for that God blessed us with this oprotunity to teach!

On tuesday, wednesday, and thursday we were busy helping president with interviews and some short meetings that acompanied them. He taught about returning to the things that matter most. In formosa someone broke into president´s car so we fixed it with cardboard and tape:) Thursday night we had our english class and it went really well. A member brought her friend and we helped them with their translator classes that they are taking.

I hope you all have a great week!

Week 67- Transfers Week

Transfer week!

This week we recieved 11 new missionaries! On monday we had transfers and luckly everything went smoothly. Tuesday we took the missionaries that were leaving to the airport and took some return missionaries to the bus terminal. That night we picked up the newbies at the airport and took them to the hotel. One of the sister´s bags was lost so we had to go back to the airport and do some paperwork so they could look for the bag. Wednesday we did the orientation and training for the newbies and trainers. We also went and did a presentation of ourselves at an English school that is owned by one of the members here. We were able to share about ourselves and also about the church. We had a few students that were really interested in the church and we gave out three copies of the book of mormon! Thursday was consejo and president gave a great capacitiation about being leaders. Today is pday and we´ll see what happens!

Have a great week!
